The history of Lá Lúnasa
Lúnasa (Lughnasadh) was established by the god Lugh in honour of his foster mother Tailtiu. The festival included athletic contests, horse racing, matchmaking, and feasting on the first fruits of the harvest. The tradition of climbing Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday (the last Sunday of July) and the Puck Fair in Killorglin are both Lúnasa survivals. August is still called Lúnasa in Irish.
