Manx blein, "year", comes from Old Irish blíadain and is the same word as Irish bliain and Scottish Gaelic bliadhna. On the Isle of Man, as in Scotland, the first person to enter a house on New Year's Day is believed to bring the luck for the coming year. In Manx this first-footer is the quaaltagh. New Year's Day was also called Laa Nollick Beg, "little Christmas Day".
