léasa means “weal (analytic present subjunctive of léas)” in Irish and is used as a verb.

léasa in context

(a) i gcás duine ná fuil thar ocht mbliana déag, ní raghaidh an méid buillí sa léasa san thar fiche ceann agus isí úirlis a húsáidfar ná slat bheithe;

( a ) in the case of a person whose age does not exceed eighteen years, the number of strokes at such whipping shall not exceed twenty and the instrument used shall be a birch rod;

(b) i gcás éinne eile, ní raghaidh an méid buillí sa léasa san thar cúig cinn fhichead;

( b ) in the case of any other person, the number of strokes at such whipping shall not exceed twenty-five;

(d) ní déanfar an léasa san tar éis sé mhí a bheith caithte o tugadh an bhreith;

( d ) such whipping shall not take place after the expiration of six months from the passing of the sentence;

(e) nuair is ar éinne a daoradh chun pian-tseirbhíse a bheidh an léasa san le déanamh déanfar an léasa air sara n-aistreofar é chun daor-phríosúin chun an phian-tseirbhís a cuireadh air d'fhulang.

( e ) such whipping to be inflicted on any person sentenced to penal servitude shall be inflicted on him before he is removed to a convict prison with a view to his undergoing his sentence of penal servitude.

Ach ní dhéanfidh éinní sa bhfo-alt so, ná in aon rialacha a déanfar fé, údarás do thabhairt chun léasa ná pionós eile cuirp do thabhairt mar gheall ar aon chionta.

Provided that nothing in this sub-section or in any rules made thereunder shall authorise flogging or other corporal punishment to be inflicted for any offence.
