La Jument is a lighthouse standing on a rock off the western tip of the island of Ushant in Finistère, one of the most exposed points in Europe. It was built between 1904 and 1911, funded by a wealthy Frenchman who survived a shipwreck nearby and left money in his will for a lighthouse to be built. It became world-famous in 1989 when photographer Jean Guichard took a shot from a helicopter of keeper Théodore Malgorn opening the door at the base of the tower just as a massive wave engulfed the entire structure behind him, creating one of the most iconic lighthouse photographs ever taken.
