Dinan is a medieval hilltop town in Brittany overlooking the River Rance, surrounded by nearly 3km of ramparts, the longest in the region. It has over 130 half-timbered houses dating back to the 13th century, and unlike Saint-Malo it escaped the bombing of World War II, so everything is original. The heart of Bertrand du Guesclin, the Breton knight who became Constable of France and drove the English out of Normandy and Brittany during the Hundred Years’ War, is buried in the Basilica of Saint-Sauveur.
