Glendalough

Glendalough means “valley of two lakes” in Irish and sits in a glacial valley deep in the Wicklow Mountains. St Kevin founded a monastery here in the 6th century after living as a hermit in a cave above the upper lake. It became one of Europe’s great centres of Christian learning before the Normans destroyed it in 1214. What survives includes one of Ireland’s finest round towers, several stone churches, and St Kevin’s Kitchen with its chimney-like belfry, all just an hour from Dublin.
