Fontaines D.C.‘s debut Dogrel (2019) is probably their most important album. Named after doggerel (working-class Irish poetry dating back to the 1630s) it was post-punk and had sharp observations about Dublin life. The Guardian gave it five stars and called it a perfect debut, it was nominated for the Mercury Prize and the Choice Music Prize, and Rough Trade named it Album of the Year. It announced five lads from BIMM Dublin as the most exciting band to come out of Ireland in years and kicked off a run that’s since included a Grammy nomination, two UK number ones, and a Brit Award. Every album since has pushed into new territory, but Dogrel is where it all started.
