Yr Wyddfa 🏴 (or Snowdon, from the Old English for “snow hill”) is the highest mountain in Wales at 1,085 metres and the tallest peak in Britain south of the Scottish Highlands. The Welsh name roughly translates to “the burial mound,” tied to a legend that King Arthur defeated and buried the giant Rhita Gawr beneath its summit cairn. Around half a million people walk it every year, with another 140,000 riding the mountain railway built in 1896. In 2022, the national park authority officially moved to using only the Welsh name Yr Wyddfa, part of a wider push to protect Welsh place names from anglicisation. On a clear day from the top you can see Wales, England, Ireland and the Isle of Man.
