The Ring of Kerry is a 179km loop around the Iveragh Peninsula in southwest Ireland, starting and ending in Killarney. The roads follow ancient paths that connected prehistoric forts, monastic sites and seasonal grazing routes long before tourism existed. Along the way you pass Staigue Fort, one of Ireland’s best-preserved Iron Age stone forts, Derrynane House where Daniel O’Connell grew up, Killarney National Park, and the departure point for Skellig Michael. Waterville was Charlie Chaplin’s favourite holiday spot — there’s a statue of him on the seafront. All tour buses run anticlockwise because the roads are too narrow for coaches to pass each other. Parts of the route run through the Iveragh Gaeltacht where Irish is still the community language.
