The Dark Hedges are an avenue of beech trees on Bregagh Road in County Antrim, planted by the Stuart family in the 18th century to impress visitors arriving at their Gracehill House estate. The trees have grown into a tangled tunnel of intertwining branches that looks unmistakably otherworldly, which is why Game of Thrones used them as the Kingsroad. Local legend says the avenue is haunted by the Grey Lady, a ghost who glides silently between the trees at dusk and vanishes at the final one. Several of the original trees have been lost to storms in recent years, and the surviving ones are now carefully protected, but the atmosphere of the place remains undimmed, especially on a misty morning before the tour buses arrive.
