The Cliffs of Moher run 14km along the Clare coast, topping out at 214 metres. The rock is around 320 million years old, laid down by an ancient river delta roughly the size of the Mississippi. The name comes from Mothar, an Iron Age fort that once stood at the southern end. O’Brien’s Tower near the highest point was built in 1835 as a viewing spot for Victorian tourists. On a clear day you can see the Aran Islands and the Connemara mountains. Around 30,000 pairs of seabirds nest on the cliff face. 1.5 million people visit every year — and most of them will know the cliffs from The Princess Bride, where they played the Cliffs of Insanity.
