St Patrick’s Day on March 17th marks the death of the man who brought Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century. Patrick was actually Romano-British, kidnapped from somewhere in western Britain by Irish raiders at 16 and enslaved as a shepherd for six years before escaping home and later returning as a missionary. The shamrock he supposedly used to explain the Holy Trinity became Ireland’s national symbol, and the day has been a religious feast day since the early 1600s.
