Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond is the largest lake in Great Britain by surface area, sitting right on the Highland Boundary Fault, the geological line where the Lowlands meet the Highlands. It’s 36km long, 190 metres deep at its northern end, and contains over thirty islands, including Inchmurrin, the largest freshwater island in the British Isles, and Inchconnachan, which somehow has its own population of wild wallabies. The famous song “The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond” is usually heard as a love song, but the lyrics about the high road and the low road actually refer to the Jacobite Rising of 1745, with one Highlander returning home alive while the spirit of his executed comrade travels back by the “low road” of the dead.
