Fanad Head Lighthouse sits on the tip of the Fanad Peninsula in north Donegal, first lit on St Patrick’s Day 1817. It was built after the HMS Saldanha sank in Lough Swilly in 1811 with the loss of over 250 lives, the only survivor being the ship’s parrot wearing a silver collar engraved with the ship’s name. Designed by George Halpin, who built over 50 lighthouses around Ireland, it has been voted one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the world and you can now stay overnight in the restored keeper’s cottages.
